
Alma has been working in the development and communications sectors for 20 years. Her areas of expertise include program and project management, radio production, media and journalism training, campaigns/public information/advocacy, and community development. She has worked on several issues – Legal rights and obligations, reproductive health/HIV AIDS, Gender based violence, Human trafficking, Land Law, Environment and Pandemics. She currently resides and works as Communications Consultant on issues dealing with legal rights and obligations for an international NGO in Cambodia. Recently, Alma has coordinated and implemented projects for disabled children for the Australian Red Cross and produced a research film on Access and Information technologies.
She comes from the Philippines where she started her career as a broadcast journalist. Since then, Alma has worked in several countries, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. She holds a Master’s degree in Development Communications. Her previous works include Facilitation on Human Trafficking workshop and Evaluation for an integrated health promotion community project in Pailin province for the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Alma was Land Information Campaign Manager for the US-based NGO, East-West Management Institute for its Land Law campaign projects. She was Project Manager for Health Unlimited’s (now known as Health Poverty Action) media health education project aimed at informing young people on sexual and reproductive health. Her other consulting works are as Trainers for UNICEF and FAO on avian influenza (AI) prevention, with Cambodia Development Research Institute on wider information dissemination with Cambodian HIV/AIDS Education and Care on developing and using HIV/AIDS training modules.
Alma also served as Consultant to UNICEF Timor Leste and developed facilitators’ and children’s handbook and visual aids for children’s radio programs. In Laos, Alma worked as Team Leader for Health Unlimited’s RHIYA Project and as Technical Consultant on avian influenza behavior change communications for the Academy for Educational Development. She has also worked as a Radio Trainer on AI prevention in Myanmar under UNICEF. Previously, she was a Trainer on Radio Production at the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development and as Interim Programme Coordinator for Asian-Pacific Research and Resource Centre, both in Malaysia.
