In large organizations the positions of Communication, Information and Press Officers are sometimes split between two or even more persons, but in the field based non-profit sector the job is usually done by one person having up to all three tasks.
Ideally the Communication Officer stands at the center of both internal and external communication. The better equipped and involved the communication officer gets inside the organization, the more successful is her/his main role in handling all incoming requests for information about and pro-actively organizing publicity for the organization.
In a first introducing training week a selected group of Communication Officers first learn the essentials for successful communication: defining the role of the communication officer inside an organization; understanding the importance of communication protocols, strategies and media plans and how to develop them; defining and implementing mission and messages in both formal and informal external communications; dealing with the media; organizing & preparing press conferences, media campaigns and public events; and preparing spokespersons of the organization for press, television or radio interviews and other public presentations.
The training envisages a follow up with twelve individual coaching sessions of 90 minutes a week for each trainee to assure that the communication officer gets truly better equipped and prepared for his/her position within the organization. During this coaching period we will fully assess the role and tasks of the communication officer within the organization, and implement the actual situation and needs while discussing and practicing all lessons/topics learned during the first week; from drafting a media protocol and strategy to improving writing skills for press announcements and news releases.
At the end of the initial training & coaching period, a final assessment of personal and organizational needs that are required for the position of the communication officer will take place and be debriefed in an advisory to the organization’s management.
Groups start with a minimum of five and a maximum of ten trainees per group at one location at the first available convenient date agreed upon by the group and the trainer. Training & Coaching are provided in English. An interpreter and training materials in the local language can be arranged on request at additional costs. Individual Coaching sessions outside Cambodia will take place through scheduled electronic sessions (Email/Skype/Chat).
